This is a category error. The essay treats the second-order process (how ambitious people execute once the work has already been chosen) as if it were the complete account of great work. The first-order question of purpose and direction is simply outside the frame. Because both author and reviewers already lived inside that same frame, the missing premise remained invisible.
Its importance
Without an explicit service orientation, the framework defaults to individual aptitude + curiosity + the desire to impress. That combination can produce brilliant but narrow or self-regarding work.
