Hey friend!
Yesterday I posted a new video about lying and integrity, with Sam Harris and Naval Ravikant. Lies, no matter how small, really are destructive in any relationship, when taking a long timeframe view.
Here is all the written content I produced (in a nice format)…
✍️ Quotes
"Few delights can equal the mere presence of one whom we trust utterly" - George MacDonald
"What is the seal of liberation? To no longer be ashamed of oneself" - Nietzsche (book: The Joyous Science)
"Self-esteem is just the reputation that you have with yourself. You'll always know." - Naval Ravikant.
"Best way to evaluate someone's integrity: See how they treat other people. Even when they make justifications for their moral failings. People with integrity simply do not behave unethically"
- Paraphrasing Naval Ravikant (Podcast with Shane Parrish).
“Play long-term games with long-term people. All returns in life, whether in wealth, relationships, or knowledge, come from compound interest.”
- Naval Ravikant

📝 Notes
- White Lies
* Definition (wikipedia):
** A lie about a small or unimportant matter that someone tells to avoid hurting another person.
----- Sam Harris -----
- White Lies
* Lies that are based on fear of how the other person will react.
* Most people believe that white lies are not morally wrong and that improves their relationships. (They see it as compassionate)
- Long-term Outcome...
* These lies will diminish the trust in the relationship.
“I'm not upset that you lied to me, I'm upset that from now on I can't believe you.” - Friedrich Nietzsche
* Your true-self will mismatch with other people's expectations of you.
- Filtering the Truth does not imply lying. It is ok to edit the truth and filter what to say and what not.
- Exceptional Cases when lying is necessary...
* Lie if you think the receptor person is likely to self-harm when he/she hears the Truth.
* Self-defense in a real dangerous situation.
- Why do we lie?
* Telling the truth feels...
** uncomfortable
** awkward
* To protect ourselves (from conflict, looking bad...).
* Makes it easier for everyone.
* * You tell the person what he/she wants to hear.
* Issue: this is always counterproductive to that person! (in the long run)
- Integrity
* What is integrity?
** When what you say to someone about him does not change when you talk to others.
* Benefits of telling the Truth...
** It can be a door to self-examination
"The unexamined life is not worth living" - Socrates
** No capacity for embarrassment
"What is the seal of liberation? To no longer be ashamed of oneself" - Nietzsche (book: The Joyous Science)
---- Naval Ravikant----
- Trust is critical in Business, because it enables Compound Interest.
- Being ethical is long-term selfish.
* It attracts high quality people
* Gives you a clear mind
📝 Takeaways
* If you wanna build a long-lasting healthy relationship, avoid lying.
* Always give honest feedback.
** Specially when you are in a position in which your opinions can help someone to improve. (mark of a true friend)

💭Stuff I've been enjoying lately...
Fyodor Dostoevsky
Lex Fridman and Jordan Peterson calls the novel "The Brothers Kamarazov" to be likely the best novel ever written. So, I got curious about this person.
Besides, Nietzsche once described Dostoevsky as “the only person who has ever taught me anything about psychology” (Gide 168).
